Disability is sort of like greatness. No, no, stay with me here for a moment. To paraphrase Shakespeare, some people are born disabled, some achieve disability, and some have disability thrust upon them. The one constant throughout for the people with these disabilities is the low expectations that non-disabled people have for them. I’m not speaking here of the countless fawning, gushing articles about people with disabilities who have achieved something truly remarkable, like going up Mount Everest (I don’t care if you ARE able-bodied, that would still be quite the achievement), but of the way people who are non-disabled are so inspired by seeing us out in public.

For instance, a Deafblind friend of mine regularly gets told she’s inspiring, for such awesome accomplishments as going out to coffee with a friend. Another friend of mine, who uses a wheelchair, inspired a passer-by when she valiantly hailed a taxi. Other people have similar stories of getting starry-eyed, goopy looks from the non-disabled who admire them as they heroically shop for cheese. Just this weekend a total stranger told me how great it was to see me working my service dog. I was shopping for beads.

All I can say about this is “Are you people really this easy to impress?” Seriously? If you’re inspired because I’m buying cheese, you really need to raise the bar. Instead of being floored by the amazingness of me working with a service dog, be impressed by the fact that I’ve devoted hundreds of hours to training dogs, including my service dog. Going out and getting coffee, hailing a taxi, getting up in the morning and getting dressed and going to work -- why are you being inspired by something you non-disabled types do all the time? Putting on your own clothes is an achievement when you’re two. By the time you’re an adult, and have done it thousands upon thousands of times, it is no longer so damn impressive that it requires total strangers to congratulate us on our ability to do it.

I cannot deny that some of us had to struggle to learn things that you non-disabled people take for granted. Sometimes it takes us longer to do these things, sometimes we do them differently than you would. Believe me, we didn’t learn our work-arounds because we’re exceptionally clever and determined to overcome our disabilities in a fashion guaranteed to astound and inspire every non-disabled person we encounter. We learned our work-arounds because like most people we experience an essential laziness -- why struggle to do something just like the non-disabled do, when that doesn’t work for us? Why expend more effort than we absolutely must? Do you go out of your way to tie your shoes in a fashion that frustrates you? Didn’t think so.

What it all comes down to, what I’m asking you to actually do here, is to give people with disabilities some credit for being functional adult human beings. Stop being so damn easily inspired that every time a disabled person leaves the house, you fall all over yourselves to congratulate us. Heartlessly, I must tell you that we don’t actually care about your approval, and in fact you have a tendency to disrupt a perfectly pleasant outing for us and add nothing but aggravation. You interrupt our conversations with friends, you crash into our contemplations on the best variety of cheese to use for dog training, you charge into our lives with sappy smiles on your faces and coo about how inspirational we are and then stand there, expectantly, waiting for some kind of response.

I never know quite what you’re looking for. Some kind of deferential gratitude for your interruption of my day to shovel your approval onto me without regard for whether I give a damn how much you’re inspired by my dairy product purchasing behavior? A chirpy agreement that indeed, it is very inspirational that I’m standing here in front of this refrigerated case trying to decide if generic extra-sharp cheddar will be more motivational for my dog than generic mild cheddar? My coping tactic, developed over the past year, is to flick a brief glance at the inspiree without making eye contact and to say “Thanks” without interrupting my activities. It’s better than my previous response of staring at the person like a deer in the headlights, because I’ve found that making eye contact just encourages intrusive questions about my body and my service dog and how they work together. It’s probably better for the inspiree than the gut reaction which I always have to choke back, which is “Go away” or possibly “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?”

And yes, I do understand that they mean well, which is what non-disabled people explain to me every time I complain about the way being a cripple seems to mean that the non-disabled have carte blanche to interrupt my life and be inspired at me. I just happen to feel that “they mean well” is not a good reason, mostly because the unspoken second half of that is “but they just weren’t thinking about how intrusive and annoying their behavior is.” Nor, I would posit, are the non-disabled thinking about just how bizarre they sound, when they approach us and interrupt our lives to explain how inspiring they find us.

Aim higher, non-disabled people. Aim higher. People of all ability levels are achieving things every day that are jaw-droppingly awesome, feats that require skill, perseverence, determination, heart and will. I’ll even make it easy for you: here’s a list of people who have summitted Everest. I assure you it took a lot more effort for the most able-bodied climber on that list to reach the top of that mountain than it did for your average cripple to get out of bed and get out to visit with friends or purchase dairy products. Stop patronizing us by implying that there’s any equivalency.
So
Deeky ONCE AGAIN posts an open thread on Shakesville that has no alt tag
and apparently, at one point, no text desc.

Someone
asks why there isn't an alt-tag or a text desc on the image
.

Melissa
McEwan thinks maybe Deeky forgot, JUST LIKE HE HAS FUCKING FORGOTTEN ON
EVERY OTHER FUCKING OPEN THREAD EVER, and furthermore you uppity cripple,
we shouldn't have to think about the needs of people who can't see images,
you should have to beg us to make things accessible
.

What I find deeply disturbing about this is that it always happens on the
"community building" posts like this -- they are deliberately left with no
alt tags (unless Deeky leaves the default "Photobucket" on there) or with
woefully inadequate text descs that don't actually tell you anything about
the images. Which leads me to conclude that while the people at
Shakesville would LOVE for you to get on board with their activism, they
would like you, the disabled person who cannot access an image for whatever
reason, to fuck off out of their community.

Great. Message received.
I keep meaning to do these on a daily basis again but it takes a lot out of
a person who is already dealing with chronic illness. So I guess I will
just keep posting as and when I am able. And speaking of disability, I
realize that we are supposed to be all welcoming and respectful of other
people's identities, but no. No, no, no. Melissa McEwan at Shakesville and
Renee at Womanist Musings both identify as "disabled" and I will stand here
and tell them to shut up and stop appropriating my identity. Ladies, you
may call yourselves disabled when you actually stand in solidarity with
other women with disabilities, rather than explicitly barring them from full
participation in your communities by refusing to establish accessibility
standards for your blogs.

McEwan, this means you are going to have to tell your bestest friends Deeky
and Paul the Spud that either they alt/title tag their pictures with
something that is actually meaningful and that they describe and transcript
their videos, or they don't fucking post them. It means that you
are going to have to learn to title tag all your oh-so-hip one-word links to
other websites. Until then, kindly shut your mouth and stop attempting to
appropriate my identity as a person with a disability. You may call
yourself "mentally ill" if you like, but you are not a person with a
disability, you are one more elitist fucker who doesn't give a damn who is
perpetuating the dismissal, othering, and marginalization of people with
disabilities.

Renee, same deal. Put up or shut up. Either make your blog accessible, or
stop claiming to be PWD. You may be suffering from chronic illness, but
until you stop marginalizing people with disabilities, you are not one
of us
.

Here
is a handy cheat-sheet for making your blog accessible, if you actually
care
.

Report cards:

Shakesville

This

Melissa

Renee

with no clarifying title tag.

Grade: F -- Renee obviously does not give a fuck about people with
disabilities.

Why am I picking on these two bloggers? Because they like to claim they are
PWD whenever it seems tactically convenient for them. They love to use it
to score Oppression Olympics points, to claim one more axis of oppression
that they can then use to beat down anyone who might criticize them. They
like to maintain "safe spaces" that are safe only for them, and God forbid
anyone should so much as post a polite "Hey, could you make more of an
effort on accessibility?" I am so tired of them sheltering themselves from
criticism. Try to tell McEwan that she's not helping PWD with her refusal
to establish and enforce an accessibility policy, and Deeky the asshole who
doesn't believe in alt tags will ride in to white-knight for her. Renee
just bans people.

And no one cares. Well, I think there's four or five of you following me
here, and I apologize to you for the sporadic updates that are getting quite
bitter and angry. I lost my ability to maintain a detached academic voice.
There was just too much that was too wrong.
I quit doing this for a few months because quite frankly it is incredibly
depressing, like a daily dose of ramming my head into a brick wall, over and
over and over and over.

Because if there's anything these score cards make apparent, it's that the
"feminist" blogosphere does not care about people with disabilities.
Shakesville's Melissa McEwan might make a big deal about how she identifies
as "disabled" because of mental illness when it suits her, but she can't be
bothered to make her own blog content accessible to people with
disabilities. Feministe has had its inaccessibility brought up on many
occasions, and there too the writers just do not give a damn. There is NO
feminist site I have found in the "big names" that actually does the minor
work to make itself inclusive of people who need alt tags, captioned or
transcripted videos, who can't handle animated blinky flashy ads, the list
could go on. I mean, if I'm wrong, let me know and I will issue a personal
apology to whatever site it is I've just maligned, but I'm not wrong.
Believe me, I'm not.

I don't know what to do about any of this. Attempts have been made to make
the feminist/progressive community aware of the fact that they are shutting
out people with disabilities, and been met with huge waves of apathy. I
don't flatter myself that I will make a difference, I don't even flatter
myself that Jill at Feministe or Melissa McEwan at Shakesville even know
about this site, let along give so much as a smidge of a flying fuck about
the story it tells: you claim to be concerned about women, you claim to be
concerned about justice, but what you mean is that you are concerned about
justice for women whose bodies work just like yours do, and the rest of us
don't matter.

After much thought, what I've decided to do is just pick one or two or three
blogs a day to score. I was doing too many of them and it was just too
much, like drowning in a sea of microaggressions every single day, hostile
acts directed at me by people who would like us all to believe that they are
great warriors for justice rather than that they are callous contributors to
the erasure, exclusion, and othering of people with disabilities. Let none
of us with disabilities be fooled. These people don't want us, they don't
care about us, and they will not help us.

Accordingly, I will also no longer be inserting the little blurb about where
to find WAVE and Vischeck, because it's blatantly obvious that typing these
things out (or copying and pasting them) is just a waste of my time.

Moving on.

Shakesville
9/20 posts on the front page contain inaccessible content.
Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("cash bonus").

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("ironic").

Melissa
McEwan posted an image with a totally inadequate alt tag that does not
explain all the "in joke" signs -- maybe if you can't see pictures, you are
not welcome as part of Melissa's little club?

Paul
the Spud posted an image with a useless alt tag ("Photobucket") and an
equally useless description ("Chase & Sanborn instant coffee") which does
not adequately describe the image.

Paul
the Spud posted an image with a useless alt tag ("Photobucket") and an
equally useless description ("hippos") which does not adequately describe
the image.

Melissa
McEwan posted a photograph with no alt tag, title text, or description.

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("on 9.11.09") yet again. Because she
doesn't care about making life easier for people accessing the web via
screen readers.

Deeky

Deeky

Score: 45%

Forty. Five. Percent. Fewer than half of the posts on Shakesville's front
page are accessible. And yet, I see people linking to Shakesville all the
time as an example of a great feminist website, and every time I see it, I
want to scream. Really, this is what a great feminist website should look
like? It should exclude women on the basis of disability? Is that how we
want it to be?

That's not how I want it to be. Let me steal a phrase from McEwan: I expect
more. I expect people who claim to work for social justice to make their
websites accessible, and not just the "important" posts but ALL the posts.
The open thread posts, the silly posts, every single one. Because
participation in those threads is often part of belonging to the community,
so if you are shut out from participation in them the message is clear: we
don't want your kind here.
I am debating rotating at least some of these blogs out at the end of the month because quite frankly this is just depressing. Then again, I suspect it would be just as depressing with other blogs.

What really irritates me about Shakesville is that posters refuse to do image description on the "fun" posts but will generally make at least a half-assed effort some of the time on the "serious" posts. Which smacks of patronizingly deciding for PWD what information it's important for them to have. Here's a newsflash for Paul the Spud and Deeky: ALL THE INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT. If it's important for your non-disabled readers, then it is fucking important for your disabled readers as well.

I've gotten some great suggestions for other blogs to monitor. Here's the thing, though, I'm at my limit for the time I have. So I'm considering rotating the blogs I skewer on a daily basis, although I kind of hate to because their accessibility scores may already be artificially inflated since I don't have time to click through on every entry. Something to ponder, anyway!

Disability Fail in 5 Easy Steps
1. Be a non-disabled person making a post about just how POWERFUL your brand new discovery of the ways disability intersects with other oppressions is. Be sure to include an image with no description in the text, alt text, or title tag, and a video with no transcript or description.

2. When a PWD points out that you have included inaccessible content in your post, demand that they tell you how to fix things. Add an alt tag to the image that tells people exactly nothing about it.

3. When provided with easy instructions on how to find clear and concise information on web accessibility, refuse to do so much as type the supplied phrase into a search box and click the link which was specified for you, but instead snarkily thank someone else for sending you a bunch of links that have absolutely nothing to do with web accessibility.

4. when someone actually follows the instructions that were provided to you and directly gives you a link TO THE BLOG YOU ARE WRITING FOR, covering THIS VERY ISSUE, act as if this is startling and amazing. Because search boxes are haaaard.

5. When the commenter points out that they in fact just followed the instructions you were given in the first place, accuse them of being snarky and disrespectful, and claim that you are trying to own your mistakes when in fact all your non-disabled self did was demand that PWD educate you and then whine when they did not.

Here, Mandy, since this is sooooo haaaaard for you:
1) If you post an image, you need to provide a text description, alt text, or a title tag for it. In that description, you should provide whatever information someone who cannot see the image needs to establish what is visually important or interesting about that image, in order to make sure that every. single. person. reading your post has the same information.

2) If you post a video, you need to provide a transcript of any and all speech in it, and a description of the visuals that should conform to the standards in point 1 for still images.

3) Link text should either be comprehensible when it is context-free, or have a title tag set to provide context information, so that someone using a screenreader to skip through links doesn't just hear a long string of "here here here here this this says here here."

4) When someone says "Yo, it is highly ironic that in this post on your amazing discovery of disability you have included inaccessible content." The correct response is not "WELL THEN EXPLAIN TO ME HOW TO DO EVERYTHING", the correct response is "Holy shit, I sure did fuck up. Let me get on google." Profanity is, of course, optional.

Please welcome Bitch Media to the class. I wasn't going to add them, thinking I had MORE than enough sites to grade, but after one of their authors wrote a piece yesterday that was on disability and intersectionality and yet had an image with no alt text, title, or description and an untranscripted flash-widget video, I said "Screw it" and tossed them in the mix, too.

Today's takeaway lesson, since three sites got pinged for hypocrisy? Stop pretending to care about ableism if you can't be fucking bothered to take even the most basic steps to make your work accessible. Just. Stop.

Mostly this blog focuses on the hard-wiring of accessibility: is
content provided in a way that is accessible to everyone? Do the
writers take care to make sure that if a picture is part of a post,
everyone reading that post gets the same information, whether or not
they can see the picture? Are blinky things minimized? Are
transcripts and/or accurate and useful descriptions of videos
provided? Do the color schemes work for people with colorblindness?
If someone is using a screenreader to run through the links, will
those links make sense?

But there's more to accessibility than that. The reader must also
consider the words that the writers use. Hostile attitudes and microaggressions spring up
everywhere, even where the reader will least expect them, even in
ostensibly "progressive" spaces where in theory the authors care about
examining their own privilege and helping to dismantle it. Alas.

For instance, often the reader will come upon a person who holds
privilege on an axis saying to someone who does not, "Just call me out
if I do something wrong!"

The reader is supposed to admire the utterer of this statement, to
recognize the superior moral quality of the person saying it. The
privileged person probably means to say, "If I have acted or spoken
hurtfully, I would like to know about it. If you choose to tell me, I
will do my best to respond with grace and humility." The privileged
person would like us all to admire their grace and humility and
openness to being called out.

Often, what the less privileged person hears is "I can't be bothered
to think about my behavior and speech ahead of time! It's your
responsibility to tell me when I screw up and teach me how to avoid it
in the future! Police my behavior for me!" The less privileged
person is probably thinking, "Your mother doesn't work here, and
someone who pays their own rent is probably enough of an adult to
police themselves."

That chirpy "Just call me out!" does nothing but reinforce structures
of privilege. It shoves the burden for the privileged person's
behavior onto the oppressed, and expects the oppressed person to be
grateful for the chance to teach this privileged person how to behave.
It demonstrates disregard for the oppressed person's time and energy
-- maybe that person has something better to do than run around
educating privileged people? It is a possibility.

Yes, yes, you meant well when you said it. You genuinely did. But it
is not the job of oppressed people to teach you how not to oppress
them. They have enough to do. It is the work of the privileged to
learn how to move through the world without perpetuating harm. Get to
it.
