I keep meaning to do these on a daily basis again but it takes a lot out of
a person who is already dealing with chronic illness. So I guess I will
just keep posting as and when I am able. And speaking of disability, I
realize that we are supposed to be all welcoming and respectful of other
people's identities, but no. No, no, no. Melissa McEwan at Shakesville and
Renee at Womanist Musings both identify as "disabled" and I will stand here
and tell them to shut up and stop appropriating my identity. Ladies, you
may call yourselves disabled when you actually stand in solidarity with
other women with disabilities, rather than explicitly barring them from full
participation in your communities by refusing to establish accessibility
standards for your blogs.

McEwan, this means you are going to have to tell your bestest friends Deeky
and Paul the Spud that either they alt/title tag their pictures with
something that is actually meaningful and that they describe and transcript
their videos, or they don't fucking post them. It means that you
are going to have to learn to title tag all your oh-so-hip one-word links to
other websites. Until then, kindly shut your mouth and stop attempting to
appropriate my identity as a person with a disability. You may call
yourself "mentally ill" if you like, but you are not a person with a
disability, you are one more elitist fucker who doesn't give a damn who is
perpetuating the dismissal, othering, and marginalization of people with
disabilities.

Renee, same deal. Put up or shut up. Either make your blog accessible, or
stop claiming to be PWD. You may be suffering from chronic illness, but
until you stop marginalizing people with disabilities, you are not one
of us
.

Here
is a handy cheat-sheet for making your blog accessible, if you actually
care
.

Report cards:

Shakesville
13/20 posts on the front page contain inaccessible content. THAT IS MORE
THAN HALF.
Deeky
posted a video with no description or transcript.

This
entry by McEwan is another horrible mess of ambiguous link text.

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("promised") with no clarifying title
tag.

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("percentage") with no clarifying title
tag.

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("smelly cat") to link to a video that is
not transcripted or described, nor did she provide a transcript or
description for the video. She also used the ambiguous link text "lent his
seal of approval" with no clarifying title tag.

Melissa
McEwan posted a video with no description or transcript.

Melissa
McEwan posted ambiguous link text ("suggested by") with no clarifying title
tag.

Paul
the Spud posted a picture with fucking useless alt text, as he always does
because he is at best an utterly thoughtless turd.

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("signed into law this summer", "expect
more") with no clarifying title tag.

Melissa
McEwan used ambiguous link text ("garbage column") with no clarifying title
tag.

Deeky
posted an image with no description and no alt or title text.

Deeky
used ambiguous link text ("the bottom of this") with no clarifying title
tag.

Deeky
posted a video with no description or transcript.

Grade: F -- Shakesville still does not give a fuck about people with
disabilities.

Womanist Musings
8/10 posts on the front page contain inaccessible content. Wow. That's
worse than Shakesville!
Renee
posts on behalf of guest poster Monica, featuring an image with no alt or
title text and a horrific mess of ambiguous links that are similarly left
unclarified.

Renee
posted two videos, neither with transcripts or descriptions.

Renee
posted an image with no alt text or description.

Renee
posted an image for guest poster Matt Kaily with no alt or title tag.

Renee
posted a video with no transcript or description.

Renee
used an image with no alt text.

Renee
used an image with useless alt text and then followed it up with an image of
some text that has no alt or title tags.

Renee
used an image with useless alt text and used ambiguous link text ("source")
with no clarifying title tag.

Grade: F -- Renee obviously does not give a fuck about people with
disabilities.

Why am I picking on these two bloggers? Because they like to claim they are
PWD whenever it seems tactically convenient for them. They love to use it
to score Oppression Olympics points, to claim one more axis of oppression
that they can then use to beat down anyone who might criticize them. They
like to maintain "safe spaces" that are safe only for them, and God forbid
anyone should so much as post a polite "Hey, could you make more of an
effort on accessibility?" I am so tired of them sheltering themselves from
criticism. Try to tell McEwan that she's not helping PWD with her refusal
to establish and enforce an accessibility policy, and Deeky the asshole who
doesn't believe in alt tags will ride in to white-knight for her. Renee
just bans people.

And no one cares. Well, I think there's four or five of you following me
here, and I apologize to you for the sporadic updates that are getting quite
bitter and angry. I lost my ability to maintain a detached academic voice.
There was just too much that was too wrong.

explicitly barring them from full

Are you saying there's no difference between

1) "I never knew this would be an accessibility problem"
2) "I know this is a problem for some people but I can't be bothered to fix it"
3) "I created this situation specifically to be a problem for some people"

?

"Explicitly" to me would indicate something like 3), while I would charitably have expected something closer to 2) to be the case.

In other words, the problem arose through inaction (not changing one's habitual workflow), not through specific action (specifically adopting a given workflow with the goal of excluding someone).

OK, so I misunderstood what you meant with "explicitly"; thanks for the explanation of your thoughts. I think I agree with you, then.
